No (Left-Brained) Child Left Behind

As most of you are already aware, people’s learning styles can be classified 2 ways: left-brained and right-brained. Left-brained people by far are the majority, and therefore the majority of people learn and are taught from a left-brain perspective.

This difference usually leads to a host of clinical diagnosis’, including ADD/ADHD, Bipolar, Dyslexia, and many more (I myself am ADHD). No child left behind (NCLB) has only exposed this difference in learning, and made it even more taboo to be a right-brainer. Instead of embracing the difference, most are now forcing right-brained children to conform to the norm.

The most popular method of conformity is medication. Children are being prescribed stimulants at alarming rates, and now some parents are being urged to give their children drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall by the schools. I have even ran across cases where parents are given ultimatums by schools to medicate their children, or have the child placed into special education classes.

Every person has a specific purpose in life, and a larger percentage of children are being born right-brained. It would be a shame for parents and the system to continue to stifle the creativity of these children. If we only have left-brained thinkers, we are not approaching the many problems we face as a nation, and as a globe.

I will be sharing much more about this topic in the future. In the meantime, here is a great test to see which side of your child’s brain (and yours) is dominant. Look at which way the dancer rotates and see which you are (clockwise = right brain, counterclockwise = left brain). Some people are able to see both.
